Travel

By Air

Seattle is served by the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, or "Sea-Tac," as we call it. Most major airlines fly into Sea-Tac, as well as several commuter airlines.

Sea-Tac is about 30 minutes by car from downtown Seattle, depending on the traffic. Taxis are available, as well as shuttles and city buses.

For those of you booking your own flights on the Web, the airport code for Sea-Tac is "SEA".

For more information, go to Sea-Tac's Web site, http://www.portseattle.org/seatac/.

By Train

Amtrak stops just south of downtown Seattle. There is service from Chicago and L.A. daily.

For more information, go to the Seattle page on Amtrak's site, http://www.amtrak.com/.

By Bus

The Greyhound station is just north of downtown. There is frequent service from various directions.

For more information, go to the Greyhound Web site, at http://www.greyhound.com/.

Around Seattle

The bus company for the greater Seattle area is Metro. The fare is $1.25 per person, except during rush hour, when it's $1.50. If you get a transfer, you can ride on that transfer as long as you like, in any direction, until it expires.

You can buy all-day passes for $5. See http://transit.metrokc.gov/tops/bus/fare/vp-home.html for details on how to buy them.

In downtown Seattle there's a Ride Free Zone, where you can ride the buses for free!

One slightly weird bit for out-of-towners is figuring out when to pay. Because of the Ride Free Zone, you don't always pay when you get on the bus. If you get on a bus in the Ride Free Zone and ride outside the Zone, you pay your fare when you get off the bus. Otherwise, if you get on a bus outside the Ride Free Zone, or get on a bus that doesn't go through the Ride Free Zone, you pay when you get on. If you want a transfer, ask for it when you pay.

If you get on a bus outside the Ride Free Zone (downtown), and plan to travel through the Zone and get off the bus beyond it, you should ask for a transfer when you board, to prove when you get off that you paid the fare.

For more information, go to Metro's Web site, at http://transit.metrokc.gov/.
